Individual investors are fickle and often their own worst enemy. This is well-known. If you need proof, just read any of the numerous studies.

Details Matter In Financial Planning

By Stephen Hart

About a month ago, Paul Streiber CFP® spoke about the importance of a financial plan and how it can work like a blueprint for your financial goals. But what kinds of plans are out there and what are the differences you should know about?

College Football, Investing and Trusting Your Gut

By Stephen Hart

Autumn is one of my favorite times of year. It’s great to move from the heat of a Texas summer towards cooler weather and a transition into the holiday season. But more importantly, it’s the time for college football, my absolute favorite sport to watch. Anyone who watches or tracks their own alma mater or a local team knows that college football can be wildly unpredictable and upsets are as common as they are exciting (unless it’s your team being upset).

Should Investors Sell After A Correction?

By Guest Columnist Weston Wellington

Stock prices in markets around the world fluctuated dramatically for the week that ended August 27. On Monday, August 24, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1,089 points—a larger loss than the “Flash Crash” in May 2010—before rallying to close down 588. Prices fell further on Tuesday before recovering sharply on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. Although the S&P 500 and Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.9% and 1.1%, respectively, for the week, many investors found the dramatic day-to-day fluctuations unsettling.

The Value of Forecasting

By Brent Everett

When markets become volatile and move toward correction territory, it's natural to want to ask the question —where do you think the market is headed? Unfortunately, it's a question that no responsible financial advisor will be able to answer — because all of the evidence indicates that it is unanswerable. That doesn't mean that there won't be plenty of "advisors" and talking heads who will be happy to try to convince you otherwise. It's a perfect opportunity to separate those who tell the truth from those who are willing to pretend to know something that they don't. They take advantage of our innate desire to make something random seem rational. And, they have about a 50% chance of being right and looking like a genius, at least for awhile.

The Importance Of A Comprehensive Financial Plan

By Paul Streiber and Stephen Hart

You may have seen one of the many popular home building or renovation shows on TV. The shows make complex construction projects appear so simple you’re convinced you can remodel a bathroom in a weekend. Of course, this is an unrealistic expectation and doing-it-yourself without a plan or any experience can lead to all sorts of frustrating outcomes.

The Patience Principle

By Guest Columnist Jim Parker, Vice President of Dimensional

Global markets are providing investors a rough ride at the moment, as the focus turns to China’s economic outlook. But while falling markets can be worrisome, maintaining a longer term perspective makes the volatility easier to handle.

Made in China

This will be much more of an opinion piece than usual, but I feel compelled to share some observations that I’ve made over the past week or so.
